River Rafting on the Ganges — Everything You Need to Know

March 3, 2025·7 min read·By Priya Nair, CEO

Grade II or Grade IV? 9km or 36km? Morning or afternoon? The complete guide to choosing the right rafting experience on the holy Ganges in Rishikesh.

The 36-kilometre stretch of the Ganges between Shivpuri and Rishikesh represents one of the world's great white-water rafting corridors. The river drops over 28 metres in elevation across this distance, creating a sequence of rapids that range from the gentle to the genuinely demanding.

Understanding the Grades

The rapids on this stretch are graded I through IV+ on the international scale. Here's what each means in practice:

Grade II (Gentle's Stretch, 9km): Suitable for complete beginners, families with children over 12, and anyone who simply wants the river experience without the adrenaline. The water moves swiftly but predictably.

Grade III (Marine Drive stretch, 16km): The standard "introductory rafting" experience. Includes the famous Roller Coaster, Cross Fire, and Golf Course rapids. Suitable for most adults in reasonable fitness.

Grade IV (Full stretch, 36km): The serious option. Includes Three Blind Mice, the Wall, and the Black Money — each capable of flipping a raft. Requires good swimming ability and physical fitness. Our guides hold WRTF certifications and carry throw bags, first aid and rescue equipment throughout.

Morning vs. Afternoon

Morning rafts (7:30 AM) benefit from calmer river levels and lower temperatures. The Ganges is holiest at sunrise, and the experience of running rapids as the valley fills with morning light has a quality that is hard to describe.

Afternoon rafts (1:30 PM) have slightly higher water volumes due to glacial melt runoff from the upper Himalayas. The rapids are marginally more challenging. The cliff-jumping stop at Jumping Rocks is more enjoyable in the afternoon sun.

Our Package Inclusions

All Premier Hospitality Rishikesh packages include WRTF-certified guides, safety kayakers, all equipment (helmet, life jacket, paddles), riverside lunch at the cliff camp, the optional 40-foot cliff jump, Ganga Aarti attendance at Triveni Ghat in the evening, overnight camping by the river, and breakfast the following morning.
